Reviewer Rules & Guidelines

Reviewers who wish to use Booksprout to gain access to advanced review copies should adhere to the following guidelines. We may take action against any account found to be in violation of these rules.

You may not use the same generic review multiple times

Using the same review over and over for multiple books appears spammy and can harm an author's reputation. Do not write the same review for multiple books.

You should attempt to read and review every ARC you download

Remember: Reviewing is optional. If you do not wish to write a review, then you should cancel your promise to review that book rather than simply ignoring it. Your reason for canceling can be just as valuable to an author as an actual review.

However, if it's clear that you're downloading more books than you can handle then we may prevent you from getting any more.

No sharing copies of an ARC

It's an author's worst nightmare to find their pre-published book already in circulation without their consent. Any ARC you download should be considered an exclusive copy for your eyes only.

You should do your best to review on time

Reviews on launch day are incredibly important to authors in terms of them getting better promotional opportunities to properly take advantage of the initial boost a book gets in the short time after it's first published. A review that appears a month later isn't nearly as helpful.

Review based on the story you receive, not how it's formatted

Remember: Booksprout is all about advanced review copies. These are often formatted by the author that wrote them, so they may not contain the same formatting as you would expect from a copy you get from Amazon or another retailer.

Write your review based on the story you receive, not whether or not it has the formatting you've come to expect.

No threats

If you're found to be threatening authors for any reason, your account will be removed immediately.

Do not ask for the author to send you a copy outside of Booksprout

Booksprout has protections in place for both authors and readers. Asking authors to go outside of the system is usually an indicator of bad intentions.

Only take ARCs that you can complete your review for

When making their books available for free to you as a reviewer, authors are asking that you write your review on stores that are important to them. Please make sure that you can actually write a review on all stores that they mark as required.

Repeatedly asking authors to mark your review as complete because you cannot review on stores they ask for is not allowed.

No lying about having completed your review on any store

Lying about having completed your review on a specific store is not allowed. If you have accidentally taken an ARC that requires a review on a store you cannot review on, then please cancel your promise to review that ARC.

One thing that could resolve this for some is Kindle Unlimited. At a low monthly price, you get access to a ton of books. The author could list the book for a couple of days on Kindle Unlimited, the reviewer could download the book through the Kindle Unlimited account, post the review, and Amazon would have nothing to say because you would have “purchased” it.

On another note, when you read a book from Amazon, your review can now be cross posted to Goodreads. It saves a lot of time. All you have to do is go to Goodreads and find your review to post it back to Booksprout.

Well for the people that say they don’t want to spend $50 on amazon In 1 year really ?? there is something you can buy on there that you will need or is essential and come on you are getting free books for reviewing! So for someone like me that read over 100 books a year - it’s a bargain If I only have to spend $50 on amazon - (yet I spend more) to get books -(I do buy some to) but majority of them I get for free to leave a review if I wish to do so, so even if I got arcs for only 80 that is a minimum of like $160 It would of costed me if each book was only $2 - some cost up to $5-$6 a book so seriously its a bargain to only spend $50 a year on amazon to review ! Saving of over $100 easy a year !  ( I know some may be on a budget I am sometimes but on amazon you can basically  Nearly buy anything and there would be something you could buy like shampoo and conditioner and you may save money !

Unfortunately Booksprout has done nothing to eliminate this bad link they claim from Amazon ... As ARC it’s imperative to have our reviews for the Author’s on a timely manner... This is  holding back the process.....

Amazon has started preventing more and more of us from leaving reviews. I have been arguing with them via "customer support" and phone neither of which actually gets me to the people who actually control the reviews. They have blocked both my husband and I from doing reviews and the only explanation we have ever gotten was telling us to go read the community guidelines which does no good since I haven't done anything that goes against them.  I too wish that all of the authors would stop requiring amazon as a review. I think goodreads and bookbub can be just as helpful. I also wish there was a way for us to cancel a promise AFTER we have already left a review on booksprout. I left reviews on every other possible site for several books and none of those authors are responding to my requests to mark my obligation complete even though I have promised to not ask them for any more ARC's since I can no longer do Amazon and thus they keep taking up space on my "due" page. I have done all I can do and amazon refusing to let me leave reviews is not my fault and beyond my control. However I am thankful for the few who did take care of it for me and I have kept my promise not to ask for any more books from authors requiring amazon. It woud be nice if booksprout had away for us to search for books not requiring amazon and search features for genre etc..

I am also a reviewer that Amazon prevents from posting as I have not spent enough with them.  I have contacted the authors and they are quite happy for just Goodreads and Bookbub reviews even though Amazon is an important platform for them.  It seems that quite a lot of us would be pleased if you would relax the "Amazon is a must" rule.

Anyone else having problems with Amazon? not letting you post a review...never had a problem until the last week. It says it cannot accept a review.
