Reviewer Rules & Guidelines

Reviewers who wish to use Booksprout to gain access to advanced review copies should adhere to the following guidelines. We may take action against any account found to be in violation of these rules.

You may not use the same generic review multiple times

Using the same review over and over for multiple books appears spammy and can harm an author's reputation. Do not write the same review for multiple books.

You should attempt to read and review every ARC you download

Remember: Reviewing is optional. If you do not wish to write a review, then you should cancel your promise to review that book rather than simply ignoring it. Your reason for canceling can be just as valuable to an author as an actual review.

However, if it's clear that you're downloading more books than you can handle then we may prevent you from getting any more.

No sharing copies of an ARC

It's an author's worst nightmare to find their pre-published book already in circulation without their consent. Any ARC you download should be considered an exclusive copy for your eyes only.

You should do your best to review on time

Reviews on launch day are incredibly important to authors in terms of them getting better promotional opportunities to properly take advantage of the initial boost a book gets in the short time after it's first published. A review that appears a month later isn't nearly as helpful.

Review based on the story you receive, not how it's formatted

Remember: Booksprout is all about advanced review copies. These are often formatted by the author that wrote them, so they may not contain the same formatting as you would expect from a copy you get from Amazon or another retailer.

Write your review based on the story you receive, not whether or not it has the formatting you've come to expect.

No threats

If you're found to be threatening authors for any reason, your account will be removed immediately.

Do not ask for the author to send you a copy outside of Booksprout

Booksprout has protections in place for both authors and readers. Asking authors to go outside of the system is usually an indicator of bad intentions.

Only take ARCs that you can complete your review for

When making their books available for free to you as a reviewer, authors are asking that you write your review on stores that are important to them. Please make sure that you can actually write a review on all stores that they mark as required.

Repeatedly asking authors to mark your review as complete because you cannot review on stores they ask for is not allowed.

No lying about having completed your review on any store

Lying about having completed your review on a specific store is not allowed. If you have accidentally taken an ARC that requires a review on a store you cannot review on, then please cancel your promise to review that ARC.

I don't give any info about the plot or characters. I DO read the books and post reviews as required. Amazon does not always post my reviews in a timely manner. I don't know what more you want.

I finally switched from my phone to my IPad and booksprout accepted the URL  link to my Amazon review. I couldn’t leave an Amazon review until the book released. Then my review didn’t show up for 4 days so I could get the link. I left my review on Booksproout way before it was due but then had to wait on all this other.

@ aatrjm - yes, Amazon CAN post quickly. I post on I've waited several days for ARC reviews (I always use a disclaimer) and a few times only minutes for that "posted" email to arrive.

I can tell you from personal information that Amazon can post a review between 3 to 8 minutes. Every book I review I write down the date and time of posting. If you have problems with the review team at Amazon better known as the Community, here is the only way to get in touch with them

[email protected], if this doesn't work then you might want to try the CEO of Amazon, here is his email address.

[email protected] Or you can call the Customer Service # and all they can do is fill out a form to send to the community, they don't even have a way to get in touch with them other than email. I would suggest if sending either one of these emails you should include the name of the book, the date and time you posted the review. They will send you back an email that 9 out of 10 times will have nothing to do with the problem.

I'm in the same boat with  Can't post reviews there because I don't buy things on Amazon. And I do all my reading on my phone  so trying to cut and paste url from reviews onto the page for which sites we reviewed on is extremely hard. I'd like to suggest it be changed so we can just type in our id on each site.

Im also having poblems leaving reviews.  Two of the last 3 Goodreads didnt recognize the books. I was able to leave the reviews on amazon.  They take time to Post. My biggest problem is I read on a tablet, which means I dont get a url so I cant share the link to the review.  Being able to send a screen shot of  reviews would make things much easier.

I have had trouble getting Amazon to post my review, but if it goes on too long or Booksprout reminds me to review it, I have written to the author to get it taken off my books Due page.  It happens a lot.

I couldn’t post the Amazon reviews on two arc books. Amazon wrote that says

We apologize but Amazon is not accepting reviews on this product from this account. If you would like to contact us about this decision, please email [email protected].

I agree. I received an email that Amazon will not post the reviews. Have anyone had happened to you?
I wish the authors will pick Goodreads and Bookbub to reviews. Amazon is pain.

Any time I review following the link through Booksprout to Amazon it takes days to get the review published. Can amazon see where we are following links through? Are they holding our reviews because of it? I’ve never had a problem before until I started reviewing off Booksprout. If we have reviewed at Goodreads and other places then Amazon is more than likely been posted and held up because of the dumb rules.
